208 • Adagio for Strings

Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber (1910–1981), Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, 1971.

Written in 1936 as the second movement of his String Quartet Op. 11, Barber arranged the Adagio for string orchestra in 1938 at the request of Arturo Toscanini, who premiered it that same year with the NBC Symphony Orchestra in a radio broadcast. In 1967 Barber set the Adagio with the text of the Agnus Dei for choir with or without piano accompaniment.
